Is there such a thing as the 'Ideal' lure? |
Here we discuss what qualities make some lures much more effective at catching fish than others. If you could wave a magic wand and create the IDEAL fishing lure, it would have the following properties:
a) There would be nothing about it that would put fish off biting. It would appeal to every sense of the predatory fish. It would look, move, feel, smell and taste real. It would have no rattles or metallic noises which don't appear anywhere in nature. It would have a fluid, natural motion.
b) It would also have the ability to get at the fish, wherever they were. The most expensive lure in the world is utterly useless if you can't put it in front of the fish.
c) It would have all of the triggering actions that make fish bite. Predators see baitfish all the time but they don't choose to eat every baitfish they see. Instead, their basic programming makes them attack the weak, injured and dying; the easy targets. The ideal bait would have to mimic all of these triggering actions.
d) You would have to be able to fish it fast to catch active fish and cover lots of water, and dead slow to catch inactive fish and at any speed in between to catch neutral fish. At any one time, approximately 10% of fish are actively looking for food, 10% have just eaten and around 80%, the vast majority, are neutral. That is, somewhere in the middle and could be tempted to bite the right tasty morsel.
Most lures are designed to catch one of the two extremes, which represents only a very small portion of the total number of fish. Fast horizontal "search" baits such as spinnerbaits, crankbaits, buzzbaits and rattlebaits etc. are designed to cover a lot of water to catch active fish. While tubes, worms and craws etc. are designed to catch inactive fish and by their nature, cover water very slowly.
e) It would be easy to use, even for a complete novice.
f) It would be versatile enough to cover many different situations.
g) Finally, the lure would have to appeal to all sizes of fish.
h) It could be worked effectively anywhere throughout the water column.
h) It would be 100% weedless.
The Black Mamba baits can be fished a variety of ways to trigger all sizes and mood levels of fish to bite and that puts more fish in the boat. The Black Mamba fishing system contains the only baits that we are aware of that meet all of these criteria.
