What Makes Fish Tick- Their Driving Forces

We can all philosophize about how moon phases and barometric pressure affects fish but why complicate winning?

Having a basic understanding of what makes fish tick will help you Up your Catch much more than dealing with fine-tuning details. When you boil everything down to its most basic level, fish need 4 very simple things to survive:

  1. They need good quality water of a suitable depth.

  2. They have to breathe, so the water must hold suitable amounts of oxygen.

  3. They need food.

  4. They don't want to be harmed or eaten.

You would do well to memorize these 4 driving forces and think about them each time you look for a spot to fish. Once you tie these 4 points in with the behaviour and preferred locations of the fish you are targeting, for the conditions that you are fishing, you are well on the way to catching more fish. We cover the habits of specific species and the use of specific lures to catch them, in other sections.
